Baikal - Amur Mainline

Date: 24/03/2021

The whole country built the Baikal-Amur Mainline. The best youth came from all parts of the vast country, worked, settled down. Families were created here, real labor exploits and discoveries were made.

BAM was designed as part of a systematic project for the development of significant natural resources of little-explored areas, along which, in fact, the road was laid.

It was planned to build about ten giant territorial-industrial complexes on the way of BAM, but the period of Soviet perestroika made it possible to complete the construction of only one South Yakutsk coal complex.

The era of the 90s passed and by the beginning of the 2000s, almost all projects for the development of the Baikal-Amur Mainline zone were suspended. The global project was increasingly considered erroneous and unpromising, although it was vital for half a century for Siberia and the Far East.

It is gratifying that today the idea of reviving the Baikal-Amur Mainline is relevant.

For reference:

  • the first super-heavy freight trains went along BAM, allowing to transport 7,100 tons instead of the previous weight norm of 4,800 tons
  • the total length of the BAM from the city of Taishet to the port of Sovetskaya Gavan is 4300 km.
  • currently an electrified double-track railway has been built from Taishet to Lena station (704 km)
  • single-track electrified road - from Lena station to Taksimo station (725 km)
  • average annual air temperatures along the entire BAM route are negative and vary from minus 3.2 ° С (Nizhneangarsk indicator) to minus 7.8 ° С (Chara indicator)
  • the absolute minimum air temperature on the route was minus 60 ° С, the absolute maximum - plus 40 ° С
  • the route of the highway runs through zones of high seismicity (up to 9 points on the Richter scale)
  • BAM crosses eleven deep rivers, including Lena, Amur, Zeya, Vitim, Olekma, Selemdzha and Bureya. In total, the BAM crosses over 3500 watercourses

A bright future awaits BAM, because a road built with love cannot but live forever!
